Winnipeg police said an 11-year-old pedestrian hit by a pickup truck Wednesday near Portage Avenue and Ferry Road is now listed in stable condition.

Emergency crews transported the pedestrian to hospital in critical condition with serious lower-body injuries around 3:40 p.m. on Nov. 7, said police.

She was later upgraded to stable.

Police said an investigation showed the 11-year-old had been trying to cross the street when the traffic lights turned for drivers from red to green.

Police said the pickup truck driver had the green light and didn't see the girl until it was too late.

"We don't typically use the term accident. We use motor-vehicle collision but this appears to be an accident," said Const. Jason Michalyshen.

Police said no one was at fault and charges are not expected.

The collision happened near George Waters Middle School.

The school division said it's considering suggestions on addressing road safety.

The school board plans to meet with area councillors to discuss the possibility of lowering the speed limit for drivers or putting up warning signs, letting people know students are nearby.

Police said both pedestrians and drivers need to pay more attention at intersections.
