A number of speeders ticketed in a Winnipeg construction zone are getting their money back.

The Winnipeg Police Service said refunds are being issued for 2,574 tickets issued by a mobile photo radar van because of a wording error on the notices.

The tickets were generated between June 27 and July 1 near a construction zone in the Kenaston and Scurfield boulevards area.

"The total face value of the tickets would be estimated at $1 million," said Det. Sgt. Natalie Aitken from Winnipeg police.

The tickets with errors list "speeding" in the citation portion when it should say "speeding in a designated construction zone."

The province recently mandated that clearer speed signs be up in construction zones to warn drivers. Fines for speeding through construction zones were also increased.

The move came after flagger Brittany Murray was killed on the job in 2010.

Police said the number of tickets issued in just a few days on the site is a disturbing amount, saying people aren't getting the message to slow down in construction zones.

Officers believe drivers that received the tickets will get the message to slow down, even after having them refunded.

The province said people who already paid their tickets will be issued a refund from Manitoba Justice. Letters will also be mailed out with instructions for everyone who received the tickets with errors.

During the time period, police said another 400 to 500 legitimate speeding tickets were issued in just five days at the end of June and start of July.
