Emterra will only collect garbage and recycling in Winnipeg for another year.

Starting in October 2017, GFL Environmental and Miller Waste Systems will pick up trash, recyclables and yard waste for the next seven years.

A report said the two companies were the top two bidders for the contracts.

Emterra and Progressive Waste Solutions also submitted bids.

The cost for both contracts is estimated at $24 million a year.

The city awarded collection to two companies in order to prevent a monopoly for the service, in case one of the businesses fails to perform.

The report also recommends the city work with CUPE to see if future collection contracts, like organic waste pickup, could be done by city workers.
