The Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre at the Assiniboine Park Zoo has received its second polar bear cub of the year.

The male orphaned polar bear cub is around the age of one and weighs 39 kg (85 lbs) which is the lightest orphan the centre said it has ever taken in.

On Friday members of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s polar bear rescue team travelled to Churchill to supervise the cub’s trip to Winnipeg.

Wildlife experts said cubs around the age of this orphaned bear, are not able to survive on their own.

The Assiniboine Park Conservancy said Conservation officers observed the cub for quite some time alone in the Churchill area. In a media release, officials said after several failed attempts to connect him with other female bears in the area, it was clear that intervention was needed.

Now in his new home at the zoo, the cub will undergo the standard 30 day quarantine period.
