A two-vehicle collision on Highway 1 Saturday afternoon has claimed the life of three passengers and left two in critical but stable condition.

Portage la Prairie RCMP said they received a call around 1:15 p.m. in regards to a serious collision at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 16.

RCMP said a minivan was travelling eastbound on the highway when it attempted to make a left hand turn north on Highway 16 when it collided with a semi-truck.

There were five people in the van. A 36-year-old man and 13-year-old boy were pronounced dead at the scene, RCMP said.

A 10-year-old boy was taken to hospital but has since died, said police. The driver, a 35-year-old woman, and an eight-year-old boy remain in critical but stable condition in hospital.

All of the passengers in the van were from Carberry, Man.

“Our thoughts go out to the family. It’s always tragic and sad to hear about such a loss all at once,” Carberry Mayor Stuart Olmstead told CTV News Saturday.

The driver of the semi, a 62-year-old Ontario man, sustained minor injuries, RCMP said.

STARS Air Ambulance was on scene.

RCMP said everyone was wearing seatbelts and alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the collision.

RCMP said traffic is delayed in the area due to the collision and RCMP investigation.
