Missing 85-year-old Maria Machel was found safe at a restaurant in Selkirk Saturday afternoon.

"We're very happy, it all came to a happy ending," said Machel’s stepson Harold Machel.

She had been missing from Winnipeg since Friday, where she was last seen at the Grant Park Shopping Centre around 10 a.m.

"You don't know if somebody's picked her up, or what's happened," added Harold Machel.

Winnipeg Police confirmed that Maria was pulled over near Shaftesbury Boulevard and Grant Avenue Friday afternoon, but it was before she was officially reported missing.

"Unfortunately she carried on, went about her business, but clearly didn't make it to her destination," said Const. Jason Michalyshen.

Police believed Machel may have been seen in the Ermerson-Franklin area, about 15 kilometres north of the U.S. border.

In British Columbia, there is an alert that notifies the public when people like Machel go missing, on social media. It’s called Silver Alert.

"It's certainly an emergency for the person and the person’s family. And it's something worthy of paying attention to. I think a little bit of effort on the alerting systems could make a big difference," said co-founder of Silver Alert, Michael Coyle.

Michalyshen says Winnipeg Police is open to new ideas to help find missing people.

"If there's something that's working or working really well in one jurisdiction, we certainly would look at that."

Harold Machel said a system like Silver Alert could have helped find Maria sooner.

He and his family are just glad to have her back safe.

"I'm overjoyed, so is my brother, so is my dad, I imagine."
