About a hundred people came together to support refugees in the most Canadian way on Saturday – by playing some good old street hockey.

“We’ve come together to play street hockey, which is a very Canadian thing to do,” said Dom Gibson, organizer for the hockey tournament that took place at Grant Memorial Church on Saturday.

The Breakaway Street Hockey Classic is put on in support of Hospitality House Refugee Ministry, an organization that privately sponsors refugees.

“Which is another very Canadian thing to do – to accept people coming from other countries,” Gibson added.

He hopes the tournament will raise $6,000 for the organization.

While a light was shed on the refugee crisis a year ago, Gibson said there are still hundreds of thousands of people who are displaced due to war and persecution.

“We feel that as Canadians who value multiculturalism, who value those who are in need, we want to support however we can,” he said.

The tournament was broken down into three divisions: ages 11-13; ages 14-16; ages 17 and older.

It ran all day Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
