One of the people trying to unseat Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger is promising a new provincial pension plan that would be mandatory for workers who don't have a company plan.

Theresa Oswald says the Canada Pension Plan is no longer offering enough support for seniors, and the federal government has refused to improve it.

She says if she becomes premier, she would look at a system like one being introduced in Ontario, which will require workers and employers to each pay up to $1,600 annually per person.

Oswald says details, such as the exact amount to be paid and the levels of benefits, would be worked out after consulting business and labour groups.

Oswald was part of a caucus revolt that has forced Premier Greg Selinger into a leadership contest at the NDP's annual convention March 8.

The campaign has become heated, with one long-time New Democrat backbencher accusing Oswald and some of her supporters of abandoning the government.
