Advocates fighting online bullying and child abuse want mandatory registration for every computer's IP address.

They said the measure could help track and deter bullies and predators from posting harassing messages on the Internet.

The discussion was part of a Beyond Borders symposium dealing with cyber bullying.

Amanda Todd took her life after being bullied online for more than a year. Her mom was in Winnipeg on Monday and said Amanda might still be alive if they'd known the identity of her tormentor.

"If we had known who it was...something could have been done in the early days. It wouldn't have had to go on for a year," said Carol Todd.

Some say the idea of registering computer IP addresses isn't practical because of privacy concerns and technical loopholes online.
