A local Air Cadet Squadron celebrated its 70 year anniversary Sunday in style.

More than 40 teens had the opportunity to mingle with one of the Canadian Forces’ top generals.

"As a whole, our squadron is pretty excited and honoured to be celebrating this,” said Air Cadet Mikayla Coad.

The 220 Red River Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron hobnobbed with General Walter Natynczyk. Natynczyk, a former chief of defence staff, got his start in 1970 with the Winnipeg squadron.

“Air cadets is all about leadership and citizenship, and to see these young people here today makes me think back to when I joined 42 years ago,” said Natynczyk.

Natynczyk said he was honoured to be part of the festivities.

Monday the squadron will celebrate with the public at 6:30 p.m. at the Minto Armouries on St. Matthews Avenue.
