The Winnipeg Police Service says it is noticing an increase in violent attacks against its officers.

A 17-year-old girl and 22-year-old man are being held in custody, after two overnight assaults.

In the first assault a 17-year-old girl at an "out-of-control" party managed to punch a police officer in the face while other officers tried to restrain her.

It happened at about 11:30p.m. in the 100 block of Stradford Avenue.

Police say the officer received a minor injury.

The girl was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer. She is being detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

The second incident happened while officers were patrolling Charles Street near Church Avenue in the North End.

A man, who police say was impaired, fled on foot after crashing his vehicle into a snow bank.

Officers chased the man briefly before he turned and charged at them. He knocked one officer to the ground and began fighting.

Police used a taser to subdue him.

Billy Joe Couture, 22, of no fixed address, faces almost a dozen charges, including impaired driving, assaulting a peace officer and uttering threats.

He is being held in custody.
