The opening ceremony for Black History Month was held at the Jamaican Cultural Centre on Saturday night.

This is the 32nd year Black History Month has been celebrated in Winnipeg. Organizers say it has evolved over the years to include events like gospel concerts and conferences.

Organizer Mavis McLaren said it's a celebration of the heritage and the legacy left behind by many black pioneers.

This year, organizers are trying to get more young people involved. They’re holding a leadership symposium to go along with this year’s theme – sustaining legacy through leadership.
