Blowing snow and poor visibility spurred road closures on the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 75 Thursday as dangerous conditions swept over roads.

The Trans-Canada Highway from Winnipeg to Portage la Prairie closed around noon Thursday. It was reopened hours later, just before 8:00 p.m.

Highway 75 from Morris to the U.S. border was also closed for much of the day. Around 5:30 p.m., it re-opened.

More information on highway conditions is available by calling 511, on the province’s website or by following on Twitter.

Environment Canada had blowing snow advisories in place for much of southern Manitoba during Thursday, with those lifted around 5:30 p.m.

In Headingley, RCMP and emergency crews responded to a collision between two semi-trailers and a pickup around 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

The driver of the pickup went to hospital in stable condition.

Police appealed to motorists to understand how dangerous driving can be in the conditions.

"We have vehicles that are still by passing the road closure so we are just advising people to stay off the roads. It's for everyone's safety,” said Sgt. Annette Fellner from RCMP on Thursday afternoon.

Winnipeg’s airport said the blowing snow was not affecting planes from taking off or landing on Thursday.

It said passengers can expect some delays, but those are related to bad weather in other destinations.

Many school buses, however, were cancelled Thursday afternoon, including in the Red River Valley and Prairie Rose school divisions.
