WINNIPEG -- The Blue Bombers have signed safety Maurice Leggett to a contract extension that will keep him in Winnipeg though the 2017 season.

Leggett was Winnipeg's nominee for the CFL outstanding defensive player of the year award. He finished his first CFL season tied for second in the league with five interceptions, including three in a 24-16 win over Montreal on Aug. 22.

He also recorded three fumble recoveries, 65 defensive tackles, and two sacks. On special teams, he returned a missed field goal 114-yards for a touchdown in a 42-20 loss to Ottawa on Oct. 3.

"I love being a Bomber," Leggett said in a statement. "From the community aspect and the amazing fan support, to the coaching staff and all of teammates, and how the organization treats us as players. It's an amazing experience to be in Winnipeg and play football professionally, and you only understand that once you spend time there."

Prior to joining the Blue Bombers, Leggett spent parts of four seasons with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions.
