Big changes are coming to minor hockey next season.

Hockey Winnipeg is banning body checking at any level in its tier A-3 program.

A spokesperson for Hockey Winnipeg tells CTV news this grouping isn't as competitive as higher levels.

It also features a wider variance in size and skill level.

The organization feels this causes a higher risk of injury when contact is allowed.

Hockey Winnipeg hopes these changes will help them recruit and retain more players.
