Winnipeg police are searching for a suspect after a man with a knife approached a 13-year-old boy from Lincoln Middle School Monday afternoon in west Winnipeg.

The boy was robbed of a small amount of cash, said police.

The student was not hurt and returned to the school to report what happened.

Police were called and patrolled the neighbourhood.

"This was a very small amount of money that was received so for someone to commit obviously a violent offence for this, it's something that's being taken seriously by our investigators,” said Det. Sgt. Natalie Aitken.

The school sent a letter home to parents, explaining the incident.

The letter said a man with a knife came up to a student near the dumpster behind Westwood Community Church. The man demanded the student’s money. The student turned over his cash and the culprit fled, said the letter.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 20s, approximately five feet 10 inches (178 cm) tall, unshaven, with brown hair, wearing a black hoodie, grey Nike sweatpants and a black toque. He had an athletic build.

Police continue to investigate.
