One of Manitoba's top cabinet ministers says the province is committed to helping an Ontario First Nation where Winnipeg gets its water.

Shoal Lake 40 First Nation has been under one of the longest boil-water advisories in Canadian history.

The reserve was made into an island a century ago during construction of an aquaduct that sends clean water to Winnipeg, and every year the lack of an all-weather road sees people falling through the ice.

Jobs Minister Kevin Chief says the federal government, Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg have all chipped in $1 million each for a feasibility study of a road, which Chief says is a start.
