The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is joining museums around the world in banning the use of selfie sticks.

A selfie stick is an extendable pole that holds a camera or smart phone beyond arm's length to help take 'selfies' or group photos.

"We think that it's better to keep to the hand held devices,” said museum spokesperson Maureen Fitzhenry, who says there are three reasons for the ban.

She says the main one is the safety of museum visitors and exhibits.

Fitzhenry says the museum is also concerned about the sticks posing an obstacle to other visitors' experience, and would like to maintain a respectful environment, given the content of some of the exhibits.

The museum doesn't allow the use of tripods either.

It encourages visitors to stick with hand-held, flash free photography.

Fitzhenry says, so far, the museum hasn't had any trouble with visitors using selfie sticks.
