A brand of cantaloupes is being pulled off store shelves due to fears of potential salmonella contamination.

Freshpoint Vancouver, Ltd., which makes Del Monte and Sysco Imperial Fresh brand cantaloupes, recalled the products after testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The CFIA warns consumers not to eat the fruit, and advises retailers, hotels, restaurants and institutions not to sell or serve the product.

The recall includes:

- Del Monte cantaloupe, 1 count, UPC (PLU 4050), sold up to and including Feb. 18, 2016

- Del Monte cantaloupe (case), 12 count, Lot 360012

- Sysco Imperial Fresh cantaloupe, 3 count, Lot 127 12 035 5

If you bought any of these products, you should throw them out or return them to the store.

Food contaminated with salmonella might not look or smell spoiled, but it can cause fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term effects include arthritis.

Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk of serious or even deadly complications.

The CFIA said there have been no reports of illnesses associated with these products.
