RCMP recruits from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba will be able to select their home province for their first posting in changes announced today by the Mounties.

New rules are being brought in as the RCMP works to update recruiting that's been described as too long, inflexible and outdated.

Among other changes: physical abilities will no longer be tested as part of an application and evaluations will now be done at the training academy in Regina.

Mounties say their standards won't be compromised by the changes, which are meant to help them stay competitive and build a diverse workforce.
