The city is studying the idea of moving garbage and recycling pickup from some gravel back lanes.

Instead the carts would be moved to the front street for collection.

There's a concern the heavy trucks are wearing down the gravel alleys.

"Garbage trucks really hack the life out of the back lane. Especially in the spring time," said Ashley Mackenzie, a St. Vital resident.

But some residents without driveways say it would be too difficult to drag their carts around to the front of their homes.

Brian Mayes, the area councilor, says the idea wouldn’t simply be imposed on people. Instead a strong majority of the people living in the area would have to agree to it first.

A report is expected back in 90 days.
