A Winnipeg city councillor is opposing speed limit hikes in St. Boniface.

Coun. Dan Vandal appeared at the highway traffic board hearing Tuesday to fight a proposed speed increase on Provencher Boulevard from 50 kilometres per hour to 60.

Vandal says the proposed increase goes against the intent of transforming Provencher into a pedestrian-friendly commercial district.

He’s also concerned about safety for school-aged children crossing the street in the area.

The board is holding hearings looking at a number of possible speed zone increases to unify speed limits on some Winnipeg routes.
