Winnipeg city councillors are packing their bags and moving while their current digs are being redeveloped.

The city said councillors will temporarily move Wednesday to the east half of the Administration Building on Main Street. That’s just across the courtyard from the City Council Building.

According to the city, the long overdue redevelopment work is needed to maintain the City Council Building and bring it up to current safety system and code requirements.

The relocation is expected to last about a year.

In mid-July, Mayor Brian Bowman and his staff will make the move to the Administration Building’s second floor. They’re expected to move back in the spring of 2017.

The City Council Building is over 50 years old, and was designated a heritage building in January of 2015.

Work will be done on the building’s roof and windows, and the Tyndall stone facade will be upgraded to prevent further water damages.

Health and life safety enhancements will also be made including asbestos abatements with potential removal, as well as fire detection, fire suppression, and alarm system improvements.

The total cost of the redevelopment is pegged at $4.1 million.

Council chambers and the building’s two committee rooms are not undergoing redevelopment, so they will continue to be used.
