The city is hoping private property owners will want to help bylaw officers catch illegal garbage dumpers.

A pilot project that started a few weeks ago is circulating six solar-powered cameras to monitor problem areas for bulky waste.

The city now wants to expand the number of locations. It's asking homeowners and businesses to agree to have a camera installed.

"What we will look at primarily are sites that are in the public realm, so public right of way. We would also look at some sites that can create an arson risk, and that's our primary focus,” said Winston Yee, manager of community by-law enforcement services with the City of Winnipeg.

The pilot project is expected to last two years. The camera locations are not made public.
