Organizers of the Manitoba Marathon headed to city hall to ask for financial help to subsidize policing costs.

The 26.2 mile race and its associated races are an annual Father's Day tradition in Winnipeg. However, marathon organizers said they had been saddled with a $20,000 bill for the first time for policing the event.

They said they could only handle $5,000 in costs.

Police, however, told the mayor's executive policy committee Wednesday morning that the cost will only be $2,500 to cover the event, so the EPC shelved the Manitoba Marathon's request.
