City of Winnipeg workers have voted in favour of a new agreement, though not overwhelmingly.

Tuesday, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 500 voted 61.6 per cent in favour of a tentative agreement with the city.

Their previous agreement expired in December.

In a press release, CUPE Local 500 President Mike Davidson said the union pushed back on concessions and worked hard to achieve a fair contract.  He said it was a very difficult round of bargaining.

The new deal provides a wage increase of 4 per cent over two years, along with improvements to job security and benefits.

CUPE Local 500 represents nearly 5,000 employees across most departments at the City of Winnipeg.

It is separate from the Amalgamated Transit Union, which is set to vote on its own tentative agreement June 8 to 11.
