The City of Winnipeg has announced a funding commitment to complete the second phase of bus rapid transit.

Thursday, Mayor Sam Katz announced the city will set aside $137.5 million for the Southwest Rapid Transit Corridor.

The money will come from the 2014 and 2015 capital budgets.

Another million dollars will go towards design work on the stations. The route has not been finalized.

Public open houses were held in the fall to review three potential routes.

"The key thing is to get this complete. We know it's a priority and we want to get it done. The city is now at the table and we're committed,” said Katz.

Katz says the route will be decided sometime in the new year.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $350 million.
