A $6 million dollar city pool refurbishment is being scaled back to make up for a funding shortfall.

Councillors on Winnipeg's protection committee heard the Transcona Centennial Pool project is more than $1 million over budget.

In order to stay within the original price tag, city administrators say the washrooms and change rooms inside the building will no longer be renovated. Instead facilities will be constructed outside. They say this was a decision made by Winnipeg's CAO.

Transcona Councillor Russ Wyatt calls the move short sighted and narrow minded. Wyatt says the outdoor washrooms will only be open two months of the year.

The project includes an outdoor pool and splash pad. Wyatt says this change delays the opening until 2017.

The indoor pool remains open during construction.
