City hall is buzzing about the topic of urban beehives.
A report before council outlines how the city should handle re-zoning the downtown area, to allow for beekeeping.
It says the city should allow for rooftop beehives, with some conditions:
- there should be no more than four hives, plus one nucleus hive
- hives must be within fencing at least 6 feet (183 centimetres) high
- the fence needs to be solid, or, if it has slats, the hive should be at least 20 feet (6 metres) away
- hives on top of a building don't have to be fenced in, if they're at least 8 feet (2.4 metres) off the ground.
The standing policy committee on property and development will hear the report at their next meeting, on Tuesday.
