The city of Winnipeg is launching a zipper merge pilot project today.

It’s being incorporated into a work zone on northbound Lagimodiere Boulevard.

A zipper merge works just like it sounds.

Drivers use both lanes until reaching a merge point, where they take turns entering the open lane, like a zipper.

The city says it reduces wait times, congestion and speeding.

Construction on Lagimodiere Boulevard is expected to continue into July.

The city says, if the pilot project is a success, zipper merges may be used more often.
