The city is moving ahead with a plan to install shields on six Winnipeg Transit buses to protect drivers.

City council is exploring options to improve safety following the murder of driver Irvine Fraser in February.

A request for proposals has been made public for the shields to be in place for a six-month trial starting Dec. 15.

The request said they must be rattle-free, not obstruct sight-lines, be intruder resistant, and still allow for communication between operators and passengers.

Feedback will be collected through a survey of drivers.

If successful, shields could be installed on all buses by August 2019.
