A Winnipeg business owner said the construction outside his store is costing him big money.

Customers could be seen stepping carefully to dodge construction in front of the Hadeda Convenience Store located at 735 Selkirk Avenue.

The owner, Ravi Aulakh, said he's worried he may have to close until work is complete.

“Business is too slow now, sales have dropped at least 30-40%. So that’s why we’re facing a problem,” said Harry Singh, who has been a cashier at the store for six months.

The city said it works to minimize the impact of construction as much as possible.

“Plans were reviewed by the area businesses who were in favour of closing this section of Selkirk Avenue completely until completed instead of doing the project one lane at a time for the entire construction season,” said a statement from the city.

Aulakh said he lives out of town part time, and was not told about these meeting.

Construction workers in the area told Singh work around the store is set to be done by October 20.
