Construction at Grace Hospital’s new MRI suite has finished and staff threw an opening celebration on Thursday.

The $10.5 million project began in May 2015 and the facility started taking in patients in mid-April. Since then, it has completed more than 500 scans and is expected to perform around 3,000 annually.

MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is used to diagnose a wide array of health problems, including injuries, aneurisms and strokes.

Officials with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said having the facility in a community hospital like the Grace allows patients to receive care closer to home.

The project received funding from the province and the Grace Hospital Foundation. It also received $3.25 million dollars from Edward and Marjorie Danylchuk, which the WRHA said is the largest-ever one-time donation to a Winnipeg community hospital.

The facility has been named the Edward & Marjorie Danylchuk MRI Building in their honour.
