A Winnipeg city councillor wants police officers on buses.

Matt Allard is tabling a motion calling for plain clothed and uniformed officers on buses to deter illegal activity and keep drivers from being assaulted by unruly passengers.

The Amalgamated Transit Union says the city loses up to $2.9 million in lost fares when drivers don't enforce payments for safety reasons.

The city has added six transit inspectors with constable status to the system.
