Two Winnipeg city councillors want to make sure people moving into new residential developments are safe in case of a train derailment.

Matt Allard and Jeff Browaty want to improve safety for new developments located near railway operations.

They want city officials to study this and report back in four months.

Last year, it came to light that CN and CP haul up to 400 rail cars carrying dangerous goods through Winnipeg every day.

Allard and Browaty's motion also referenced the 2013 disaster in Lac-Mégantic, Que.
