A Winnipeg couple is planning to take a trip around the world using only their bikes as transportation.

Michael Horbay and Lisa Kappel have pledged to visit all 43 Folklorama pavilions using their bikes to get to each venue. They became inspired to take on the tour after visiting the festival in 2014.

“We only got to see 14 pavilions last year,” Kappel said. “This year, we first planned just to see the pavilions we didn’t get to visit last year, and then we thought it would be really cool to see it all.”

The couple will average about three pavilions a night, beginning at the venues furthest away from their neighbourhood and riding to the pavilions closer to home as the night goes on. While cycling offers an environmentally friendly mode of transportation, it also allows a solution to the crowds.

“The stress of not driving and not having to worry about parking is really phenomenal,” Horbay said.

The couple is documenting their cycling tour on social media, giving updates on their routes and which venues they plan to visit next. The buzz has many pavilions taking notice.

“I love what they’re doing,” Tyler Magnaye, adult ambassador at the Pearl of The Orient Philippine Pavilion said. “It can be tiring to even drive to three pavilions in one night, but biking is a real feat.”
