Fire officials said a person was found dead after a house fire in North Kildonan.

Crews were called to the fire on Merrill Crescent around 12:45 p.m. on Jan. 25.

Extensive flames and smoke were sighted at the rear of the home.

The man’s body was found on the second floor inside the home, said fire officials.

"We went in - we had to pull the crews out and we went in again. We did a search and we found a deceased person on the second floor,” said Chris Carey, fire platoon chief.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Winnipeg police are also investigating. They haven’t confirmed the identity of the person who died.

An autopsy has been scheduled.
