Community: Riverdale Municipality (Rivers, MB)
Project: Community Centre Sound System

Project coordinator, Laura Gillingham, says the Riverdale Community Centre is a hub used year-round for sports, day camps, social events, suppers, public hearings and other community events. She says it contains almost everything except for a decent sound system. To cover sound in its current state, a system needs to be rented 30 minutes away in Brandon. The community has funds raised, but not enough to cover total costs. Should they win Manitobaville, they’d install a new professional sound system in their facility.

Community: Anola, MB
Project: Skate Park

Just beside the Anola Community Centre sits an unused gravel pad, which was intended to be built upon until financial difficulties and a lack of funding stalled the project. Preliminary cost and design plans have already commenced. Several years later, the intention is to use the Manitobaville money to build the Anola Skate and BMX Park for local youth.

Community: Kelwood, MB
Project: Skating Rink Repairs

The Kelwood Skating Rink was built in 1968, and had been a big part of the community with hockey, figure skating, winter carnivals, etc. Last winter, the weight of a heavy snowfall caused a roof collapse and the rink was rendered unusable. The roof was cleared away and an outdoor ice surface remains, but the intention is to rebuild the rink on the site of a demolished curling club. Fundraising is already underway, but the Manitobaville prize will give it a boost.

Community: Bloodvein First Nation
Project: Basketball Court

Local nurse and reserve resident, Jasmine Colucci, says her heart hurts for children in the Bloodvein area, where she feels a lack of recreational activity has helped to contribute to an increase of crime and suicide rates. There used to be an arena, which burned down. Play structures are dilapidated or non-existent – one of which was recently run over by a drunk driver. Jasmine hopes to use Manitobaville proceeds to build a basketball court for local youth.

Project: Grotto Enhancements

The unique grotto is a proud symbol of the community, and requires upgrades to help stabilize the stone mass and beautify the surrounding area. Manitobaville prize money would be added to ongoing fundraising proceeds intended for the preservation of the grotto, the improvement of nearby walking trails and the revitalization of the riverside through the creation of an enhanced fishing area and boat launch.

Community: Vita, MB
Project: Canteen and Washroom Upgrades

The Vita community canteen and washrooms are in disrepair. The outdoor facilities, built by the Vita Lions’ Club in 1972, have preservation assistance provided by volunteers and clubs within the municipality, but require additional modernization to keep up with the demands of the community. Manitobaville money will help to improve safety for those who use the facilities and manage the canteen (better storage, more counter space, repaired windows), which will also in turn, allow them to host more high-caliber events.

Community: Kenton, MB
Project: Memorial Hall Renovations

The Kenton Memorial Hall, built in 1946, hosts many events within the community, like weddings, socials, dances, yoga classes and more. If they were to receive Manitobaville winnings, they would put it towards planned-for interior renovations and outdoor landscaping for a green space outside the Hall, which would be turned into a community park.
