A customer's nightmare over a bedroom set has him speaking out about a local furniture store.

Horst Habeck can't rest until a drawn-out business deal finally ends.

He put money down on a solid wood bedroom set in March, but five months later it still hasn't arrived.

“We ordered this furniture in good faith and I've got nothing to show for it and I'm out a thousand dollars,” says Habeck.

He said he gave Treehouse Furniture on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg that deposit March 24 and that the salesperson told him his order would arrive in eight weeks.

When he hadn't heard from the company by June, he went back to the store looking for answers.

He said the salesperson told him it would be ready July 16. It still hasn't arrived, as of Aug. 20.

“At least if you get a phone call telling you, you know what, your furniture's going to be delayed for a certain reason - that I can accept, but five months and no phone call?” he questions.

Treehouse Furniture has an 'F' rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Most of the complaints involve delivery.

Co-owner Lee Hopfner said its manufacturing plant in Morris backed up when they had to find a new supplier.

The company only uses local products and labour.

“The situation is because of something out of our control. The stain supplier went bankrupt,” said Hopfner.

He says they try to call as many customers as they can about delays.

He says his business is getting back on track, saying

“We hope to be back to 12 weeks on delivery by the end of the year. Hopefully we can do that, so we're going to be telling customers it's going to be 12 to 16 weeks for any new customers from now on.”

Habeck returned to the store Aug. 17 and asked for his money back, but Treehouse Furniture doesn't return deposits because all orders are custom-made.

Habeck filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the fraud unit.

The next day Treehouse contacted him, saying his furniture will arrive by the end of August.

Habeck said he's learned from this experience.

“Do your homework before you purchase anything,” he said.

CTV also spoke to another woman who has a nearly identical tale to Habeck's, except she ordered her furniture in January and it did arrive in July.

She's happy with the furniture but not the customer service.

Treehouse Furniture once held a Better Business Bureau accreditation but did not pay for a renewal this year.

On top of that, BBB said Treehouse Furniture would not receive accreditation because of a number of outstanding complaints.

When that happens, businesses can't re-apply again for three years, and at that point have to pass BBB's criteria before getting accredited.
