Wireless services are back on after not functioning in several western and northern Manitoba communities including Swan River, Flin Flon and The Pas Thursday.

According to MTS, problems started shortly after midnight and were fixed by technicians sometime after 10 p.m.

“A damaged fiber cable located in a river between Gilbert Plains and Dauphin was identified as the source of the issue,” said a spokesperson with MTS.

According to Swan River Mayor Glen McKenzie, the problem mostly affected local businesses.

“Businesses relying on interact, debit or credit could only take cash today,” said McKenzie.

McKenzie explained residents were forced to go into the bank to get cash, as ATM machines were also out of order.

He said landlines were still working.

“It’s a bit of a wakeup call that makes you realize how much people rely on internet and cellular services,” he added.
