The risk of drinking and snowmobiling is the central focus of a new provincial campaign promoting safety on the snow.

The initiative is a joint effort by Snoman, the Snowmobilers of Manitoba, and Manitoba Public Insurance.

Alcohol-Free Family Zone is the name of the campaign, which supports a zero tolerance for drinking on the trail system or in any Snoman warm up shelters.

“With approximately 12,000 kilometres of designated trails, 53 clubs and over 150 shelters it is essential that we embrace safety throughout all aspects of our recreational activity,” Snoman President Alan Butler said. “We encourage our club members and other snowmobilers to respect the Alcohol-Free Family Zone.”

Snoman said it created the campaign as a result of its continued efforts in promoting snowmobile safety.

According to RCMP, 10 people have died in nine snowmobile collisions since Jan. 1, 2014. Alcohol was considered a factor in six of those collisions, resulting in seven deaths.
