Activists took to the steps of the Manitoba legislative building Saturday to speak out against poverty in the province.

The group said they were hoping the demonstration would spark a discussion about high levels of poverty in Winnipeg and the rest of the province.

“If we can’t make sure that every single person has a job and a home and can make their own choices – that they have an education to support those choices – then there’s something wrong,” said Cheryl-Anne Carr, who coordinated the demonstration.

Carr said child poverty is of particular concern in Manitoba.

The event was held as a follow-up to the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Oct. 17.

That day can be traced back to 1987, when more than 100,000 people gathered to honour victims of extreme poverty in Paris, France.
