CTV News has learned new details about the 16-month investigation that lead to the arrest of Raymond Cormier, 53, who is accused of killing 15-year-old Tina Fontaine.

Winnipeg police confirm various covert techniques were used during the investigation but would not confirm if that involved electronic surveillance, surveillance by actual officers, or even face-to-face contact by undercover officers.

Police said the details would be shared with Cormier’s defence team but would not be made public to protect the integrity of the investigation and future covert operations.

CTV News has also learned multiple labs in Canada were used to in the forensic portion of the investigation and one of those labs consulted with a European lab for help analyzing the results.

Initially police said Cormier was arrested in the Vancouver area on Wednesday, December 9.

Police now confirm the arrest took place in the resort town of Whistler, about 120 kilometres north of Vancouver.

The arrest took place in an open area and was made by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit.

According to Sgt. John O’Donovan, WPS members were supported in the investigation by members of the Vancouver Police Department and RCMP.
