New numbers obtained by CTV news show just how many new drivers in Manitoba are getting into crashes.

According to Manitoba Public Insurance, between 2010 and 2014 there were 23,201 crashes involving teenage drivers.

Of those collisions alcohol was involved in 120, speed was a factor in 1,451 and distracted driving was a factor in 2,578.

Melody Bodnarchuk, a volunteer with Mother Against Drunk and Driving, has an office wall filled with the face of everyone in Canada that was killed by a drunk driver.

"The one thing that struck me when I first saw it was all those young faces on there," she said.

Her nephew Brett Yasinsky is one of those young faces, he was killed by a drunk and distracted driver in 2010.

That same fall, 17-year-old Amutha Subramaniam and 19-year-old Senhit Mehari were also killed when their vehicle was hit by an impaired driver that was also texting.

Since then, numerous MPI campaigns have targeted those who use their cell phones behind the wheel.

"No radio, no coffee, no distractions within the vehicle," said Harold Tabin, an instructor with the Confidence Driving School.

He explained that other than cell phones, young people are also distracted by their friends.

"Learn your right of passage and become confident and trusting of your own ability first before you take on a passenger," Tabin added.
