Fire officials said the extreme cold Tuesday in Winnipeg posed challenges for crews battling a blaze on Trent Avenue in East Kildonan.

Firefighters managed to rescue a dog from the home. No one else was inside the house at the time.

Officials said the frigid weather meant crews could only work for short periods of time, before needing to warm up.

Firefighters said the blaze on Trent started in the attic area. Crews had to climb on the roof to try and get the fire under control.

A damage estimate has not yet been set.

There's no word yet on what caused the blaze.
