Parents in the Elmwood area are on high alert after a man tried to lure a young girl into his van after school.

Police say an eight-year-old girl was walking home from school Thursday around 3:30 p.m.

As she passed the intersection of Kent Road and Keenleyside Street, a man in a white, unmarked passenger van drove up beside her and told her to get in the vehicle.

He offered her candy and then said her mother told him to pick her up. The girl ran away and told her mom.

The suspect is described as a white man, clean shaven and short, dark hair. He was wearing a black zip-up hoodie.

Winnipeg Block Parents say if you’re approached by someone you don’t know, run and scream “no” and then go find your parents.

If you can’t find them, go to a store or home with a Block Parent sign.

They said the strangers inside the home with the sign are safe because they undergo criminal background checks and child abuse registry checks every two years.
