Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the City of Winnipeg saying humidex values are expected to approach 40 from early Saturday afternoon until late in the evening.

An alert on the Environment Canada website said very warm air across the southern part of the province, combined with abundant low level humidity as a result of recent heavy rains, is to blame for the high humidex value.

The UV Index for Saturday is 9 which is assessed as very high.

People spending time outdoors are encouraged to limit time in direct sunlight, wear lots of sunscreen on exposed skin and drink plenty of fluids to decrease risk of dehydration.

The warning said heat illness can affect any segment of the population but older adults, infants and young children, and people with chronic illness are at greatest risk.
