With all of the verbal jabs often thrown around the council table, a referee might make a good fit at city hall.

Current CFL ref and former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Dave Donaldson has signed up to run for the councillor seat in the Daniel McIntyre ward.

Donaldson, who is also a community youth activist, will be challenging longtime incumbent Harvey Smith. Four other candidates are also vying for the spot. Cindy Gilroy, Keith Bellamy, John Cardoso, and Godwin Smith are hoping to oust the councillor too.

Smith said he is not concerned about the number of challengers, pointing to recent accomplishments like helping save the Sherbrook Pool and getting the city to fine landlords for failing to provide proper heat for tenants.
