Relatives of a man killed in a hit and run want to know what happened on the night a vehicle struck him.

Family members said his smile could light up a room. Dwayne Duka said his stepson, Cody Joss, had a huge heart to go along with it.

"It's not the same if we don't see that,” Duke said.

Excited to put presents under the tree, Cody, 21, had just finished Christmas shopping on Friday after work and took the bus home.

Duka said he was looking forward to giving to others.

"He was really pumped,” Duka said.“That’s what he liked.”

Except Joss never got around to delivering those gifts.

He missed his bus stop.

As Joss crossed Inkster Boulevard to catch another bus home, a westbound vehicle struck Sherri Duka's oldest son.

He died in hospital on Saturday.

"Someone took my baby away,” she said.

Winnipeg police said the driver didn’t stop after the collision.

"It's inhumane. It's just inhumane,” said Dwayne Duka.

“I don't understand how anyone, no matter the situation, can leave a body on the ground fighting for his life.”

Duka said his family is willing to forgive but first they need answers.

Police are still looking for the suspect vehicle.

It's described as dark-coloured pickup truck.

"I just would like someone to come up and say, ‘I'm sorry it was an accident,’” Duka said.

“It's never going to bring our son home but at least we know."

The intersection has a controlled crosswalk.

But the family said they're not sure whether the vehicle ran a red light, or, if Cody crossed at the wrong time.

That's information investigators have yet to release.

The victim’s uncle, Danny Duka, said no matter what happened, it’s not right the driver didn’t stop.

"I just want for my brother and his family to have that closure,” said Danny Duka.

Cody lived with attention deficit disorder and Asperger's syndrome.

His stepdad said it never stopped Cody from doing anything.

The two of them had worked together at Cadorath Aerospace for five years.

"He was an amazing kid. He taught me things,” Duka said.

Family members said they still plan to open gifts together on Christmas morning and imagine the smile it would put on Cody's face.
