A family in mourning held a vigil for a man who died after a stabbing just days before Christmas.

Diane Sinclair’s brother Hector passed away in hospital a week-and-a-half after being stabbed on during what she called a “violent” home invasion on Beauty Avenue on December 22.

Sinclair was sent to hospital in critical condition along with another man. Family of the 42-year-old fisherman said they were hoping he would pull through over the holidays, but he died on New Year's Eve.

The other man was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.

Hector's ex-wife Jackie Sinclair said he was close to his granddaughter, Mia-Lee. “She calls him Papa, and now she's not going to have her papa anymore, and that just breaks my heart," she said.

“He was a happy-go-lucky guy. He had love in his heart for everybody. He was a very good man,” said Hector's cousin, Brook Traverse.

The Sinclair family moved to Winnipeg from Lake St. Martin following the flood in 2011. Hector’s death is now bringing people from their home together, said Diane.

"We're all trying to pull together as a family, and having all the community members come out, coming to the hospital and supporting us,” she said. “(He) had a lot of friends, and we're grateful for all the support that everybody showed us."

The family says it’s still looking for the person who stabbed Hector.

“I wish that person would just turn themselves in as soon as they can, so we can have peace," said Jackie.

Winnipeg police are not confirming is if the attack was random, and can't say if there was a relationship between the attacker and the victims.

The investigation continues, and police urge anyone with information to come forward.
